How to: Install or re-Install vmware tools


    In some cases you may need to re-install the VMWare tools available on the VIRL server. This
    procedure will show you how to remove and install VMWare tools. While it may not cover both
    ESXi and Workstation installs, the process remains the same for each platform.

    Getting Started

    Your VM must me running and fully booted before you start

    • Open the console to the VIRL virtual machine
    • Click on “VM” from the tool bar
    • On the resulting drop-down window; select “Guest” > click on “Install/Upgrade VMware Tools”
    • This action will open a file explorer window; drag and drop the vmware tools zip file to “Downloads”
    • Click on the eject button next to the CD icon on the side bar to remove the vmware tools media
    • Open your Downloads directory and double click the vmware tools file to extract
    • Take the defaults and just "Extract here”
    • Open a terminal window and run the following command:

    sudo ~/Downloads/vmware-tools-distrib/bin/

    • Take all the defaults
    • Once the process is complete, you can now upgrade the tools with this command:

    sudo ~/Downloads/vmware-tools-distrib/

    • Take all the default options and log out after successful completion
