    Packet Tracer for Ubuntu 6.1.1

    Chad
Hands-on labs running real Cisco IOS Software - Cisco Learning Labs for CCNA and CCNP Students

I am trying to install Packet Tracer for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I am fairly new to Ubuntu and only know a few of the commands. I have been able to install some packages but only by following step by step instructions. I downloaded the tar.gz file of Packet Tracer 6.1.1 Student. It is currently in my downloads folder and has the following as its name (typed exactly as I see it in the folder):

"Cisco Packet Tracer 6.1.1 for Linux - Ubuntu installation (with tutorials) - Student version.tar.gz"

I know I have to "unpack" and create a new folder which I did right onto my desktop. This is where I am lost. There is an "install" file in the folder that says it is the install script.

My basic question is how in the world do I install Packet Tracer on Ubuntu? (Please be gentle as I am a newbie when it comes to anything Linux.)

      Thanks in advance.

Not sure it works, but you can try:

As i told you, not sure it works, but I hope it does.

Thanks Enrique. I was able to use the link you provided to install the older version of PT 6.0.1. Simply because when I download 6.0.1 it is in fact a shell script that I was able to install through the command line. This work around will work for the time being as I can use it for some labs.

However, I will need 6.1.1 PT in order to use it during the Chapter Skills Integration in Semester 4. I will have to talk with my instructor and have him look at my laptop to see how to install the newer version. Thanks again for your help.

Ha, in my univertisy any teacher would have just told me...
Use Windows, or at least a virtual machine...
Glad I was able to help :)

Well I can ask my teacher as he is certified in Linux. However, I wanted to try to do it myself as I am teaching myself Linux while I am finishing up my CCNA. As I said I was able to install the old version of Packet Tracer with no problems by following the link you had sent in your first reply.
The 6.1.1 version of PT on Netacad is in the form of a tar.gz package. I can "unpack" it just fine, but when it comes to installing the "unpacked" package I run into issues... I will find out tomorrow in class what I was doing wrong. When I find out I will post the answer to this thread.
How far along are you in your studies? I am about to be in Semester 4. I am having nightmares about EIGRP as I finish up Semester 3. LOL

I finally got packet tracer 6.1.1 working on ubuntu 14.04 64-Bit.

First you can right click on the tar.gz file and click extract here or press ctrl+alt+t (opens terminal) and run these commands to install.  On step 2 just type in Cisco and then press tab and it will fill it in for you.

                  cd ./Downloads
                  tar -xzf Cisco\ Packet\ Tracer\ 6.1.1\ for\ Linux\ -\ Ubuntu\ installation\ \(no\ tutorials\)\ -\ Student\ version.tar.gz
                  cd PacketTracer611Student/
                  ./install

                  1. cd ./Downloads
                  2. tar -xzf Cisco\ Packet\ Tracer\ 6.1.1\ for\ Linux\ -\ Ubuntu\ installation\ \(no\ tutorials\)\ -\ Student\ version.tar.gz
                  3. cd PacketTracer611Student/
                  4. ./install

During the install just keep the default locations and answer yes to every question.

If you are using ubuntu 64-bit it wont load because it was missing ia32-libs.  In order to get it back in 14.04 you have to add a repo.

                  Commands

                  sudo -i
                  cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d
echo "deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring main restricted universe multiverse" >ia32-libs-raring.list
                  apt-get update
                  apt-get install ia32-libs

answer yes to install the new packages (tons of them for 386 support).  It will run for some time.

after it was done, it started right up.  I would remove the ia32-libs-raring.list file after you install it because it will not be updated at a later date.

after it's all installed you can run the command, listed below, in a new terminal (dont use the one from adding the repo because it is root)

                  • packettracer
                  • 6. Re: Packet Tracer for Ubuntu 6.1.1

I wouldn't use Ubuntu 14.04 because of that bug out that puts Ubuntu and Apple's OS X  vunerable.  I use Ubuntu 14.1 beta2!

                      Shane,

That has already been patched by tons of the distros.  You can check by running

                      • env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable' bash -c "echo this is a test"
if the output has the word vulnerable in it, you are not patched.

I've tried Obie's tutorial on kali linux and everything works well. Until I typed packettracer in terminal and nothing happened. Just a sentence "Starting Packet Tracer 6.1" came out.

                        Any idea?

                          Hi there ,

Regarding the "Starting Packet Tracer 6.1" message when you are typing packettracer in terminal window and the program wont start :

Try setting execute permission to the PacketTracer6 file inside bin folder ( /opt/pt/bin )

I had the same issue , checked the file permissions and saw it wans't executable . For this you can try  running in terminal

                          chmod +x PacketTracer6

                          ( when inside the /opt/pt/bin folder )

                          Take care

I'm pretty sure he meant PT 6.1.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS!

                              if you review the link.

How to install Packettracer 6.0.1 and 6.1 in Linux (ubuntu 14.04, fedora 20, linux mint, debian)

                                Sajith

One minor thing, I did all the things but could not launch packettracer until I set packettracer installation folder permission to 777.

                                cd /opt

                                sudo chmod 777 pt -R

Error pops up saying permission error, and with this setting everything works fine.

To add a desktop launcher, create a .desktop file with relevant data.

After adding 32-libs as mentioned, setting permission if required, things will work out.
