How does a DHCP server know what IP addresses to use with DHCP relay?

      Hello All

Quick question about DHCP relay. I understand the concept of DHCP relay, but what I don't understand is how does the DHCP server know what IP addresses to lease to each VLAN/subnet relayed to it?

For example: let's say that a relay is relaying the DHCP requests for three different VLANs/subnets 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.2.0/24, and 192.168.3.0/24. The DHCP relay is router 1 and the DHCP server is router 2.

How does router 2 (the server) know what IP addresses to lease to each of the VLANs? How do you configure router 2? Do you have to set up three separate DHCP server instances? Thanks in advance for helping a neophyte on his way :-D
