    Hierarchical Network Model

I'm currently studying CCNA3 (Switching) using CCNA Companion Guide and I want to ask something about the 3-Layer Hierarchical Network Model (Access - Distribution - Core).

First I'm wondering... is this model invented/used only by cisco or is it generally used in networking ?

If I understand correctly this model can be used for designing not only LANs but large/wide-area networks too. Also, apart from switches, a network designed using this model can also contain routers and other devices (at least distribution and core layers). Is this correct ? So, if this is the case, why is this 3-layer model introduced in the switching chapter ?
