I'm in an IPv6 class looking at a trace where a host with a MAC address of 00:11:d8:39:29:2b acquired a v6 address of:
What I'm wondering is where the 02 came from in the fe80::211?
I expected to see an IP of fe80:11:d8ff:fe39:292b.
Thanks for any and all knowledge shared.
The 2 appears because bit 71 is set to "1". There's a good blog post by Michel Grossenbacher here that explains why bit 71 is always set to 1 in EUI64 addresses.
