I came here yesterday with the same question. I had trouble navigating through the posts, but gave up.
There was a teaser video 3 months ago (Cisco VIRL 2: Massive New changes! - YouTube) but I would also like to know some kind of update.
Hello Andy and Bradley,
That video from David Bombal's interview at Cisco Live has me excited about the latest changes in store for VIRL. However, at this time, I don't have any new information besides what has already released. I definitely understand the interest and concern and have escalated your request for updates to the VIRL Team.
Also, I do want to point out, Vernon Palango is the new Product Manager for CML/VIRL. So, I've pinged him to see if he can shed some light on this thread.

Last I heard was back on 16 July 2019 by Geoff Anderson.
"I have to be somewhat vague, as there are some factors that may be out of our control to start the EFT. That said, the issues are primarily business related, and they are being addressed quickly. If I was a betting man, I would say that the formal notification for EFT is weeks away, and that full release will be roughly a quarter (3 months) later, to allow us to gather feedback and act on any major items."
With that statement, I was hoping for a release by about Xmas, with a more realistic expectation of Q1 2020.
However, I don't even know if the Early Field Trials have commenced, so who knows?
