The question is really wether or not the Cisco reference platform has built-in support for any given technology. For VPLS, the main requirement is that the reference platform must support Layer 2. As for generating traffic, note that there is a 200kb throughput limitation on the reference platform so to not take unnecessary CPU resources. Could that may have caused the PE to crash? Can you provide more detail or your VIRL simulation file?
