Issue with ARP entries on FLAT network

    Matt

I have recently completed a fresh install of VRIL 1.5.145 and was able to get the FLAT network to communicate with a physical network outside of virtual environment. However in order for a device inside of the VIRL environment to communicate with the outside world, I need to add a static ARP entry for the default gateway. This work around seems to work for most cases, however some devices that I would like to be able to lab up in VIRL do not have an option to add static ARP entries for the management VRFs.

The ARP table on the VIRL server shows the correct entries, including the default gateway of 172.16.1.254:

      virl@virl:~$ arp

Address                  HWtype  HWaddress           Flags Mask            Iface

      172.16.1.58              ether   5e:00:00:00:00:00   C                     br1

      172.16.2.254             ether   00:22:be:00:e4:ce   C                     br2

      172.16.1.56              ether   5e:00:00:00:00:00   C                     br1

      10.160.84.1              ether   00:22:be:00:e4:c7   C                     eth0

      172.16.1.254             ether   00:22:be:00:e4:cd   C                     br1

      172.17.0.2               ether   02:42:ac:11:00:02   C                     docker0

      172.16.1.53                      (incomplete)                              br1

      172.16.1.52                      (incomplete)                              br1

      172.16.1.51                      (incomplete)                              br1

      172.16.1.200                     (incomplete)                              br1

      172.16.1.49              ether   5e:00:00:01:00:00   C                     br1

      virl@virl:~$

but the routers in virl only have the VIRL server itself at 172.16.1.250:

      show arp vrf Mgmt-intf

Protocol  Address          Age (min)  Hardware Addr   Type   Interface

      Internet  172.16.1.58             -   5e00.0000.0000  ARPA   GigabitEthernet0/0

      Internet  172.16.1.250            0   0050.568a.d2dc  ARPA   GigabitEthernet0/0

      iosv-1#

      and obviously pings fail.

      iosv-1#ping vrf Mgmt-intf 172.16.1.254

      Type escape sequence to abort.

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 172.16.1.254, timeout is 2 seconds:

      .....

Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)

      iosv-1#

      iosv-1#

however as soon as I add a static arp entry the pings complete fine to the default gateway and beyond:

      iosv-1(config)# arp vrf Mgmt-intf 172.16.1.254 0022.be00.e4cd arpa

      iosv-1(config)#exit

      iosv-1#

*Sep 20 15:20:18.236: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by console

      iosv-1#ping vrf Mgmt-intf 172.16.1.254

      Type escape sequence to abort.

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 172.16.1.254, timeout is 2 seconds:

      !!!!!

      Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/3/6 ms

      iosv-1#

Has anyone seen this or have any ideas?
