What is the difference between switch and multiplexer?

    Tomas

      Hello.

Below is the definition of a multiplexer taken from Wikipedia:

a multiplexer (or mux) is a device that selects one of several analog or digital input signals and forwards the selected input into a single line

Apart from the ability to handle an analog signal, how is this device different from a multilayer Cisco switch? The switch also can take in multiple input signals from many attached clients and forward those inputs through a single trunk link towards a gateway. So why to use a multiplexer?

      Thank you
