Hi, if I want to unzip my bin so it doesn't have to deompress every time I start my router, can someone show me the steps?  I tried with 7-zip and it didn't work for me.  I recall someone mentioning a different utility but I don't remember where I saw it.

WinRar works like a charm !

Okay, got it now.  I had extracted twice all the way down to a file named 0.  The first extraction worked like a charm.  Now I see no decompressing when starting .  7-zip works as well btw.

            Thanks

sorry for the noob question guys but how do I enable idlemax? I have manually edit .net topology and put idlemax = 100 but when I run and re-open with gns3, its gone =<

Definitely use idle pc. You actually should play around with this quite a bit until you get as low as possible for cpu utilization. On my pc I have gotten it down to basically zero for 2691 and around 3-5% for 7200 routers. It took me about an hour to find those values, but it was worth it to be able to run so many routers.

If you don't mind, from your post above, I'm wondering what ideal idle pc value should I assign.

                  Thanks in advance!

choose the idle pc value with this ------>  *

I am trying to Use GNS3 on one PC to control hypervisors on 1 or 2 other PC's I need to do this because I connect the nic cards on my PC's to real switches. So I need to spread my virtual routers around to other PC's. Does anyone have good instructions on how to do this? I've been trying to get it to work off and on for about 2 years with no luck at all. Using XP on my PC's.

                      Thanks.

                        Something like this maybe:

                        http://blog.ipexpert.com/2011/02/28/gns3-and-physical-switches-breakout-switch/

You'll just need to split up things a little...

                          Hi John,

Im just new with GNS3 and set 4 7200 routers and one ASA. I did perform line con 0 and exec-timeout 0 in the config mode, select the * value for Idle PC, after a while, my CPU shoots up to 100 percent and never gone down, even after re calculating the best value idle pc ( with * mark). What could seem the issue ? The network is so slow that even a simple ping to ASA interface is getting time out .

                            Hi,

The culprit is ASA, there ain't no IdlePC for ASA in GNS3 so you'll have to use either

BES if you're using Windows OS or cpulimit if you're using Linux OS.

                            http://mion.faireal.net/BES/

                            http://cpulimit.sourceforge.net/

                            Regards.

Hi everyone thanks for posting. I don't run GNS3 per se, I run dynamips/dynagen in ubuntu server. GNS3 GUI has come a long way since the crashy buggy interface I used to use, but currently I have no need for the GUI. I have run over 20 routers without an issue.

It was ROCK SOLID in freeBSD when I tested it, but right now I have it running in a ubuntu server VM on my ESXi server with 3vCPU and 3GB RAM

I am only running 10 routers right now for CCNA studies.top.PNG

A secret I found is to use the IDELMAX = 100 command. DRASTICALLY decreases CPU use. Another thing that is handy to use is a terminal server, which is really easy to set up. Whenever I need to poke around, I just telnet to 172.16.1.100 9999 and I can switch between routers.
