GNS3 + InternetworkExpert Lab workbook for CCIE SP lab

    Frank Geldner

      Folks,

Who is using GNS3 and InternetworkExpert Lab workbook for CCIE SP lab preparation?

It would be very useful if someone is using the same setup. This will ensure a detailed technical discussion and will help us for lab exam preparation.

Hello Frank. I just purchased SP package from INE and I'm planning to configure the GNS3 topology this wknd. As far as I have seen there are 3 different topologies from this material that I have to mount on GNS3:

          - Workbook 1

          - Workbook 2

          - Advanced Class on Demand (just to follow some of the configuration examples that the instructor performs)

Correct me if I'm wrong or share your plans on this subject

          R/Ernest.

            Ernest,

Great. Learning in a team makes sense.

I'm still working on Lab Workbook II lab1.

I simplified the GNS3 setup in the way that I use only 7200 for the lab.

My plan is to go to all configuration tasks, use the offical Cisco docuementation.

I will have my 3 weeks bootcamp in Nov.  this year. December or may be Janauary the lab exam.

What is your plan? How do you want to proceed?

Any idea, how we can share our experience or optimize our study?

In which time zoen do you live?

Hello Frank, glad to hear from you. I see that you way ahead of me regarding to the preparation for the lab!

I just recently started to work with INE material, after consulting with a couple CCIE R&S friends of mine and read some recommendations by INE instructors I've decided to take the following approach:

              1. Follow the extended exam blueprint (http://blog.ine.com/2008/12/04/ccie-sp-lab-exam-outline/)

              2. Read every topic from this blueprint one by one using Cisco documentation or the great books by Ivan Pepelnjak and/or Luc de Ghein, after covering a particular topic listen to the advanced COD and then practice the same technology using the Workbook 1.

              3. After getting comfortable and knowledgeable with every topic get my hands on the Workbook 2.

              4. Take the bootcamp a couple of weeks before the lab.

As you can see, I'm just starting and it will take me a while to get through all the technologies covered by the blueprint, the important thing for me is to get into the rhytm

I would be happy to share my experience, techniques and non-copyrighted material with you. I will PM you. I live in the GMT -4 timezone.

              R/Ernest.-

                Ernest,

How are you? Where are you in regard to CCIE SP? Have you passed the lab or you are preparing SP 3.0 lab? I didn't pass my first attempt on SP2.0 and now I'm studing for SP3.0 lab.

Therefore, I'm looking for a virtual study group....

                  Frank,

Just curious about INE's work books for spv3. How do you like them & would you  recomend those? I prepared for spv2 & got kicked out of the ball park with spv3. After hearing of GigaVelocity's spv3 rack, started working on spv3. How well GNS3 supports al lthose new features in the blue print? I have never been a person for simulators & have enough 72's running 122-33.SRE but 76's & xr12K's.

                                                                                              Regards, Asoka Perera

so INE SPv3 books are out? I do not see anything on their site.

                      Hi Frank,

If there is updated INE SPv3 books, I am interested. I have only old one and it might not conver SPv3.

                        Hi,

You can do all IOS tasks with GNS3. There are some minor issues with GNS3 you should be aware like remote interface status. sh ip int brie on the local router will not refelct remote port status.

The most challenging part is the combination of XR and IOS configuration dependencies. Yes, you could connect GNS3 with real equipment but you need XR devices ...

XR syntax is differenet to IOS and I guess you need as well as some hands-on before you start the lab exam.

                        Frank

                          Hi,

Of course, INE's lab 2 does not cover CCIE SP blueprint 3.0 but it's a good starting point. I used INE's workbook and enhanced the lab with CCIE SP blueprint 3.0.

I recommend that you should carefully study the supported features on the 12k and 7200. Some of the topics covered in CCIE SP blueprint 3.0 cannot be configured .

As an example, H-VPLS is not supported on 12k w/ XR3.9.1. PPPoE client/server is not supported on 7200 and 12k w/ used ios versions. IPFRR is only supported on XR. How can you do it in the SP lab?

Only some ideas, how you can optimze you preparation...

                          Frank

                            Hi Frank

Just wanted to say hi to you.  I am starting my journey for CCIE SP lab and I plan to take the exam in August.  I have bought INE SP bundle which is v2.0 with v3.0 ATC video stream and started working through the Vol-1 WB. So far, I am managing it with GNS3 but as you are way ahead of me in terms of preparation, I am hoping that I can draw on your support if I become stuck with GNS3 in future as I know there are limitations to what you can do with it. At the moment I am working on Vol1 OSPF lab and so far so good.  Just wondering when you are planning to take the lab exam?

                              Zahid,

All topics (exepct RPL) can be configured w/ GNS3. I did several labs, blueprintv2 labs but also I created my own labs to study on specific topics. My experience in the last month is, that you don't get any useful information about blueprintv3 labs. Therefore I concentrated myself to really understand all the different areas which are required for the lab exam. Whether this is the right way, I don't know. We'll see soon.

XR configuration practice is a challange, if you do not have any XR system and you defenetly need the right XR system. For instance, layer 2 sub-if's are differently configured on the 12k compared to ASR9k. In addition, you need to know the difference from a CLI point of view (BGP - vrf - md5 - mtu size). There are also some interop issues you need to know between IOS and XR.

Come back to your question - GNS3 is good for getting the right understanding of the technologie and the practical experieince on IOS configuration.

In one of the forums, I have seen that 80% of the required configuration is done, of course with failures. So we need to be good troubleshooters.

                                  Hi Guys,

Is there anyone who has been working with GNS3 for CCIE SP v3.0 lab practise for INE workbooks setup & topology except XR specific configs? Can you share your experience please ?

You can do 100% of the IOS configs in GNS3.  As you know though a large portion of the exam is IOS XR.  If you learn the technologies in IOS you can easily transfer this knowledge to XR.  There are some caveats in XR, but all the SPv3 relevant ones are covered in the workbook.

With the workbook initial configs I built a .net file for GNS3 and ported some of the main hardware-based initial configs over, but there's still some parsing you will need to do to port all of them over successfully.  Mainly it's just changing interface names, but the XR configs need a little more massaging.  They're included in the regular workbook initial configs but in case you don't have the link you can find it here: http://ine.co/spv3initialconfigs
