It's been a while since this blog has shared an update on IT networking salaries, so we've decided to do it right and give you as full a global picture as we can. There's arguably no better way to do that than to bring you a glimpse of some of the 2017 Robert Half Technology Salary Guides from a range of countries around the world. We've not only visited the United States and Canada here, but have also taken a peek at Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, France, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

Compared to last year's look at global salaries via Robert Half Technology, the rate of salary increase is down in a number of countries. Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States reflect drop-offs in the rate of increase between 2016 and 2017. On a more energizing note, however, is the fact that IT security and data science and big data job roles consistently show the highest rates of increase in the tables below.

Take a spin through the compilation here and see what sort of perspective it might lend you from where you sit in our increasingly connected world. Note how many countries share a focus on digital transformation, the importance of combining technical abilities with business savvy and soft skills, and the ongoing challenge of overcoming talent shortages, especially as regards security and cybersecurity.

Australia

Now that we are squarely in the era of digital transformation, it is not surprising to read in the Robert Half report for Australia that "the greatest opportunities will be for candidates with very specialist skills, particularly in digital technologies." It is that rapid advance of digital transformation, however, that is leading to IT skills shortages in Australia.

This is, of course, creating a scramble for talent, with software development, applications development, and cybersecurity ranking as particularly business-critical areas. Systems, network and cloud engineers are also in high demand.

Here are 2017 annual salaries, in Australian dollars, for particular roles in Australia:

Brazil

Despite a backdrop of political and economic turmoil and uncertainty, 83 percent of companies surveyed were nevertheless still planning on doing some hiring during the next 12 months. And even as the competition for ideal candidates remains fierce, CIOs are challenged to find IT professionals able to combine technical knowledge with business acumen and soft skills. The CIOs surveyed as part of Robert Half's Brazil report cited the following areas as being the most difficult for finding qualified candidates: software development (61 percent), security (47 percent), applications (46 percent), and networking (45 percent).

Here are some salary ranges, in Brazilian real (R$), from the Brazilian report. These figures represent monthly wages:

On a positive note, the Brazil report affirms that having Cisco network administration skills can augment by 9 percent the salary ranges of Network Architect/Engineer, Network Administrator, Telecommunications Manager, Infrastructure Manager, Security Information Manager, and Security Analyst.

Canada

Like many other countries, Canada faces an IT talent shortage; 68 percent of CIOs surveyed by Robert Half say it's challenging to find skilled IT professionals today. Big data and network security are two of the biggest initiatives fueling demand.

As we've seen elsewhere, Canadian employers struggle to find job candidates who can combine technical expertise, ability to drive business outcomes, and soft skills for team success.

Here are 2017 annual salaries, in Canadian dollars, for particular roles in Canada:

Chile

The Robert Half report from Chile speaks to economic instability taking place within the country but indicates that the labor market is not paralyzed. What it does mean, according to the report, however, is that hiring has been on the conservative side and wages have been stable.

In Chile's IT sector, as is the case throughout the world, the need for specialized technical skills exists, but also the ability to tap into a broader set of skills for adding value to the larger needs of the business.

Some Chilean salary ranges, in Chilean pesos, are as follows. These salary figures represent gross monthly wages:

France

Digital transformation appears to be front and center in France, where those with expertise in digital technologies are being recruited heavily. Burgeoning technical areas such as automation, robotics, smart cities, and the Internet of Things are all contributing to the focus on digitalization in the job market. In fact, 56 percent of Directors of Information Systems (CIOs) surveyed for the Robert Half French report invest 30 to 60 percent of their time in the quest for innovation at their company.

Key digital skills being sought after by recruiters are agility, comprehensive understanding of IT, business, and marketing, and the ability to communicate across job roles to help fully commit an organization to digital transformation.

Hong Kong

When it comes to IT, Hong Kong is seeing significant growth. Investment by companies in digitalization, social media, cloud, and big data and data analytics are helping to drive this growth process.

"In the rush to implement new technologies," says the Robert Half Hong Kong report, "Hong Kong companies are finding themselves in a war for talent." A whopping 98 percent of Hong Kong CIOs surveyed say they are facing a challenge sourcing skilled technology professionals. That reality is no doubt adding to some of the impressive salary increases (from just one year ago) that we see in the chart below.

Cybersecurity is a huge priority in Hong Kong, according to the report, with 82 percent of CIOs indicating that they will face increased security threats in the next five years as a result of a shortage of IT security talent.

Singapore

"The war for technology talent is heating up," says the Robert Half Technology report for Singapore. In fact, 100 percent of CIOs polled in Singapore confirm that they are finding it challenging to obtain skilled technology professionals. Where is the challenge greatest in the IT sector? Similar to other countries, IT security, digital transformation, and data analytics are popping up as the most crying needs. The top 3 permanent IT positions in demand, in fact, are data scientist, IT security specialist, and digital project manager, according to the Singapore report.

Big data gets special attention in this report. The CIOs surveyed in Singapore, to the tune of 46 percent, say that their non-IT senior management team lacks sufficient knowledge of big data and the efficient use of data within their organization.

For their part, 51 percent of Singaporean technology employees in the survey indicate that they are not being paid a fair salary in proportion to their role and job duties. The good news, though, is that some of the salary increases presented in the table below look pretty robust as compared to other countries.

United Arab Emirates

Uncertainty in the market and OPEC's reducing oil output are accounting for some business slowdown in the United Arab Emirates, says the Robert Half Report for that country. But the report indicates that the situation has now seemed to stabilize, and projects and ventures are getting back on track.

In the telecommunications realm, companies are pushing into areas such as smart cities and the Internet of Things.

There is room for IT professionals to grow, says the UAE report, in mobility, cloud, data security, and big data. Cybersecurity, in particular, is a major need when it comes to talent. The Robert Half report cites a PwC report that only 45 percent of firms in the Middle East have a clear IT security strategy in place, and that half of companies have suffered greater than US$500,000 in losses.

The need for specialized IT skills in the United Arab Emirates notwithstanding, the Robert Half report makes it clear that cultural fit and collaborative ability are important considerations in the hiring process. "It is no longer enough to be technologically adept: the IT professionals who are particularly valued are those who can make a difference to the business and its productivity/profitability as quickly and effectively as possible," states the report.

United Kingdom

The introduction to the Robert Half salary guide for the United Kingdom includes a strong nod to digital transformation: "Another big trend to emerge in the past 12 months is the digitisation agenda. Businesses recognize that to compete with new disruptive market entrants and provide the best service for customers, they need to harness new technologies that will enhance business processes."

As part of all this, the United Kingdom guide makes it clear that it is both technical and business acumen that are important: "The integration of technology capabilities into business models means that technology specialists have to be more client facing and act as business partners with the organisation—this is no longer just the case at the CIO and CTO level."

IT security continues to be at the top of the list of CIO hiring priorities, with 52 percent of executives surveyed indicating that skilled IT professionals are challenging to find in this area.
